Two mums will hike 100km through bushland for Oxfam

TWO Mackay mums have challenged themselves to do a 100km hike through rugged bush to raise money for charity.

Kate Gardner and Kelly Sutherland, who both work at Hail Creek Mine, decided to take on the Oxfam Trailwalker Brisbane fundraising challenge with two other friends from Brisbane.

Together they're aiming to raise $5000 and awareness of the organisation, which works with impoverished communities around the world.

Ms Gardner said she'd travelled to some of the remote villages in Africa and the Middle East supported by Oxfam and had seen their work firsthand.

"Having seen it all and the difference it actually makes for people ..." she said.

Ms Gardner and Ms Sutherland have been training hard for their gruelling 48-hour trek from Mt Glorious to Mt Coot-tha, which kicks off on June 14.

"I did a 250km bike ride in the Pilbara (WA) for the Fred Hollows Foundation - other than that this is probably the largest physical challenge I've ever done," Ms Gardner said.

"I'm really excited though I am quite nervous."

She said their workmates had been supporting them with fundraising on site and they had been holding raffles and cupcake stalls to raise money but were seeking business sponsorship.
