Truckie in his 70s trapped for hours, remains critical

UPDATE 2.05PM: THE driver of the truck who crashed on the Peak Downs Highway on Thursday has been transported to Townsville Hospital by the Royal Flying Doctor Service still understood to be in a critical condition.

The 70-year-old man was travelling from Nebo to Mackay in his trade-back truck, when he came off the road and rolled down an embankment. The accident held up traffic on that road for hours.

Forensic Crash Unit are still investigating.

Meanwhile, the schoolgirl, 8, who sustained some injuries after being hit by a car on Gordon St yesterday, is expected to be released from the Mackay Base Hospital later this afternoon.

UPDATE Friday 11:20am: A MAN who crashed his truck on the Peak Downs Highway remains in a critical condition at the Mackay Base Hospital.

The 70-year-old man, was travelling from Nebo to Mackay  in his trade-back truck, when he came off the road and rolled down an embankment.

He was stuck in the vehicle for about two hours, before being freed and rushed to hospital.

Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, the girl who was struck by a vehicle in Mackay's CBD yesterday, remains in a stable condition at the Mackay Base Hospital.

UPDATE 4.40pm: POLICE are investigating a serious traffic crash that occurred Thursday morning at Nebo. It was a horror day on Mackay region roads, with numerous crashes including one that injured at least one pedestrian, a school girl who had to spend the night in hospital.

Initial information suggests that at 11.25am, a truck has rolled on the Peak downs Highway at Nebo Junction and struck a tree.

The man aged in his 70s was taken to the Mackay Base Hospital with serious head and chest injuries.

The highway was closed to one lane and the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

EARLIER 2.20pm: Traffic at the scene of a truck rollover this morning is queued more than five kilometres and the Peak Downs Hwy remains closed.

A Police Forensic Crash unit has also arrived at the scene.

The truck rolled about 11.30am, trapping the driver.

Fire crews cut the driver from the wreckage and he has been taken by ambulance to Mackay Base Hospital in a serious condition. Queensland Ambulance Service said only one person has been transported to hospital.

Three fire crews and Nebo SES were the scene, where the vehicle was halfway down an embankment.

The crews had to stabilise the vehicle before freeing the driver.

A QFES spokeswoman said it took about two hours to get the driver out of the truck.

She said the semi-trailer was empty when it went down the embankment.

UPDATE: A driver trapped in a truck on the Peak Downs Hwy has to be evacuated by road.

RACQ-CQ Rescue was contacted about the emergency, but was unable to assist.

According to a CQ Rescue spokeswoman, it was a safety issue and the helicopter was unable to land near the site because of severe weather conditions at Nebo.

The truck rolled on the Peak Downs Hwy about 11.30am on Thursday.

Three fire crews are working to evacuate the driver, who is trapped upside down in a wreck that is "very unstable".

According to Queensland Ambulance Service, a helicopter has been called to airlift the "seriously injured" driver.

Paramedics received the call about the roll over at 11.30am.

A QAS spokeswoman said the highway has been blocked.

Emergency services have advised motorists to seek alternate routes.
