US air strikes kill 150 militants in Somalia

AIR strikes by the US on an al-Shabaab training camp in Somalia have killed more than 150 Islamist militants about to embark on a large-scale militant campaign, the Pentagon says.

The weekend attack - about 200km north of the capital, Mogadishu - reportedly came after several weeks of monitoring.

Although still a presence in areas of Somalia, the al-Qaeda affiliate has been hit hard in recent years by African peacekeeping forces and government troops.

The US offers bounties on several of the group's senior commanders.
