THE United States has claimed back-to-back Olympic gold medals and continued its dominance of the women's eight rowing competition.

Unbeaten since 2006, the American crew once again left the competition in its wake, leading home Canada (silver) and the Netherlands (bronze).

The Australian crew had hopes of figuring in medal contention, but slipped over the last half of the race, finishing in last place.
