Star's Cars: golfer Paul Gow

ONE of the most likeable men in golf and a familiar voice to Australian fans as a commentator, Paul Gow is always worth a listen.

He knows his cars too, but admits his driving ability with a rear drive V8 Commodore in younger years wasn't as impressive as his golf driving.

We pitched our motoring questions to the golfing cheeky chappie:

What was your first car?

A brown 1982 V8 Commodore SLE. This car didn't last that long as it was way too powerful and I smashed it into too many poles and side rails. I once took out six wheelie bins when I lost control in the wet in front of my girlfriend's house. Her parents weren't very happy with me.

What are you driving now?

I am driving a Hyundai Genesis. It's super smart with so many features; my favourites being the "puddle lamps" (side lights that turn on when you approach the car so you don't step in puddles) and the head up display (projecting speed on the windscreen). Living in Sydney you need some power under the bonnet to merge in this crazy fast city and the V6 engine is perfect for that.

What cars did your family have while you were growing up?

I am one of six kids and we needed a big car, so we had a lime green 1978 Chrysler CL Valiant wagon.

What is your greatest frustration on the road?

Drivers not allowing people to merge.

Do you have any preferred driving music?

I listen to Cold Chisel and Guy Sebastian with a little Ed Sheeran thrown in.

If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be and why?

I would go with Fatty Vautin and John Gibbs as they are mates that I like to play golf with. We would try and play every golf course along the way and I would take their money on the course.

What would be your dream car if money were no object?

I always said I wanted two things in life for me personally: a Tag watch and a Porsche.

If I could afford a Porsche it would be the 911 GT3, but for now I've got the Tag watch.

ONE DAY: Paul Gow's dream car - the Porsche 911 GT3. A decent run on the Senior PGA Tour should get one in the garage in no time.
