Vandals compound Centros damage

THE opening of Centro Market shopping centre is expected to be delayed for another month due to vandals flooding the already flood-damaged centre.

Sometime between 8.30pm on Friday` night and 7am on Saturday morning, offenders climbed over the construction fencing surrounding the shopping centre and illegally gained entry to the building by forcing open the double doors on the eastern side of the building.

The offenders then turned on taps in the amenities and other various points around the centre, leaving them on.

They also discharged fire extinguishes throughout the building before turning on the four fire hoses and leaving them to flood the premises.

It is unknown how long the taps were left running, but the incident left extensive damage throughout the building.

A spokesperson from Centro Market shopping centre said due to the ongoing police investigation, Centro was unable to provide further information at this stage.

“Please be assured every effort is being undertaken by all contractors involved in the recovery of the centre to ensure the centre is operational as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said. “We will provide a further update later in the week.”

Police are still investigating the incident.

Police urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Emerald police on 4983 8100.
