BACKPACKERS are a big part of the tourism trade in Australia and the VanJam music competition at Agnes Water tonight will firmly establish the Gladstone coastal tourist town as one of THE stopovers for the younger international tourist.
The VanJam project is a music competition for backpackers to jam, show off their talent and win some prizes, and at the same time raise the profile of the tourist destinations where it is held and money for the flood relief appeal.
Competitors at a number of high-profile backpacker stopovers on the east coast of Australia, between Melbourne and Cairns, will have their song or act recorded and the winners posted online within 24 hours of the night as a great advert for the area, along with things to do at the destination.
Southern Cross Backpackers on Round Hill Rd, Agnes Water is said to be one of the best laid-out and equipped backpacker accommodations in Queensland, if not Australia, and was recognised as such by the VanJam organisation on its list for the competition along with other backpacker meccas such as Byron Bay and Noosa.
The events will be open to the public for a great night’s entertainment, fun, and an open mic and jam sessions – but only backpackers can compete in the actual music competition.
Southern Cross Backpackers owners Lisa and Chris Canavan said it was great promotion for the area.
