FANTASY bras, feathered "Angel" wings and a multimillion-dollar payday - this is the lucrative world of Victoria's Secret.

The US lingerie giant will stage its annual fashion show in New York this week, featuring 60 of the world's top supermodels.

They include Kendall Jenner, Bella and Gigi Hadid, along with "Angels" Adriana Lima, Behati Prinsloo, Taylor Hill, Stella Maxwell, Elsa Hosk, Lais Ribeiro, Candice Swanepoel and Sara Sampaio, among others.

Strutting in a Victoria's Secret runway show is big business for the brand and models, who are among the top-paid in the world, according to Forbes.

Eight out of the top 10 models featured on Forbes' highest-earning list in 2017 - Jenner Bella and Gigi Hadid, Gisele Bundchen, Lima, Karlie Kloss, Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Liu Wen - have all modelled for Victoria's Secret.

Last year, their collective earnings were more than $US90.5 million ($A125 million). And it's not just their bank balances that are in the millions - they have seriously influential social media followings as well.

Victoria's Secret made the careers (and bank balances) of some of the world's most recognisable models including Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen and Australian Miranda Kerr.

But what does this all mean for sales of the brand's bras and knickers?

Victoria's Secret is still the No. 1 lingerie company in America and it said to be worth $US7 billion, according to Forbes.

In July, the brand recorded a 1 per cent decline in sales, with a drop in demand for bras and its activewear line, Victoria's Secret Pink, but growth in its line of beauty products, according to Forbes.

Victoria's Secret is still raking in serious cash, thanks in part of the massive publicity around the annual fashion show.

Overall sales jumped by 4 per cent in the first six months of 2018, according to businessinsider.com.

It has more than 1600 lingerie and beauty stores globally, and is expanding into Australia this month, with the opening of its first full-scale, US-style flagship store in Melbourne.

Up until now, Victoria's Secret has only operated "mini" boutiques in Australia, which stock briefs, accessories and fragrances but none of the brand's bras.

REAL LIFE OF A VICTORIA'S SECRET MODEL

Australian Shanina Shaik, 27, will walk in her fifth Victoria's Secret runway when the show is staged in New York.

"I didn't expect that I would be doing the casting this year, in all honest truth," Shaik said, speaking to News Corp Australia.

The Melbourne-raised brunette did not make the cut the past two years (after previously appearing on the VS runway in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015).

"I felt good about myself and I think that's an amazing career shift for me, I was confident within myself and I was … happy whatever the result," Shaik said.

While the runway at Victoria's Secret is about looks, Los Angeles-based Shaik said it was her mindset that made the difference this year, compared to previous castings.

"I think I was quite relaxed with myself. When you put too much pressure on yourself to be something … you see the energy," Shaik said.

"I probably wasn't being my complete self when I was doing my (past) castings because I was stressed and worried about the result.

"Rather than just, 'you're here, you look great! And you worked your butt off. Enjoy this moment! Just be relaxed with whatever the outcome is.'"

Shaik will be joined fellow Australians Kelly Gale, 23, and fresh faces Alannah Walton, 18, and Duckie Thot, 22, who are both walking the Victoria's Secret runway for the first time.

Shaik said Victoria's Secret was "life-changing" for a model's career.

"For everyone, it's a really big deal," she said.

Shaik's workouts have included hot pilates, cardio and weights training in the gym, along with a machine that "triples your workout in 20 minutes".

"(Before the casting) I worked out once to twice a day," Shaik said. "It's really important to listen to your body. If I was tired, I needed to rest and take a day off, and let my muscles sink in. I did a lot of (hot) pilates work and cardio."

"I mix it up. I think that's important so you don't get bored.

"I worked hard for it."

New York-based Gale has modelled for the US lingerie giant four times, including last year's controversial show in China.

So what impact has being a Victoria's Secret model had on her career?

"Other clients pick up that you've been in the (Victoria's Secret) show and more people want to work with you," Gale said.

"And yeah, you get really good exposure.

"You can't just show up to the VS casting. A couple of months preparation goes into it, really hard work beforehand, I amp up my diet routine and my fitness routine.

"You have to be your absolute best on that day."
