AUSTRALIA'S love affair with the homegrown TV biopic might be dead, with Nine's much-touted House of Bond flopping in the ratings.
As reality TV continues to dominate the ratings war across all networks, Nine's two-part series on the life of Alan Bond pulled big acting names like Rachael Taylor and Sam Neill but could only average 657,000 viewers across five capital cities on Tuesday night.
It comes just two months after Network Seven's widely panned miniseries on Paul Hogan tanked with a dismal 837,000 viewers.
The House of Bond ratings, which saw the show ranked as the 11th most-watched show on Tuesday night, were despite a strong lead-in audience of 1.185 million viewers from The Voice.
Both House of Bond and Hoges were well down on the dizzying ratings heights of two million viewers reached by INXS: Never Tear Us Apart in 2016 and HOWZAT in 2012.
In fact, while reality television ratings are holding strong, the numbers for miniseries have been on a downward trend with 2016's Brock (starring Matt Le Nevez as the Australian race car driver Peter Brock) on Channel 10 also failing to crack the magic million mark.
Channel Nine's publicity team was yesterday selling the show, starring Ben Mingay as Bond, as the winner in its timeslot and receiving a national peak metro audience of 1.137 million viewers.
However, TV commentator and Mediaweek editor James Manning says the results were "disappointing but not surprising considering the downward trend in the genre".
The numbers would also be a real "concern" for Channel Seven, adds Manning, who are currently working on their Olivia Newton-John biopic starring Delta Goodrem.
However, he doesn't believe networks should give up on the dramas altogether. "The success of miniseries Molly at the Logies shows that real Australian stories can still be popular with audiences," Manning said.
