THE much-awaited and newest Apple iPhone is finally here.

This morning, thousands of people around Australia will be lining up at their local telcos to get their hands on the iPhone 4S.

Kayla Bruce, Georgia Spry and Rhyanna McKernan have not yet signed up for the new version, but said they'd be keen to check it out.

Two of them own the iPhone 4 and love it.

"I live on my iPhone," Rhyanna said.

Manager of the Rockhampton Optus 'yes' Shop Jodi Ferguson said she was expecting a crowd at her store which was opening at 8am especially for the occasion.

"There's been a lot of hype," Jodi said.

"It's like Christmas for telecoms."

Jodi said she wasn't sure how many iPhones her store would get in, but she was sure she'd be able to meet everyone's needs.

Smartphones of all types are proving popular. An Optus 'Smartphone Study' revealed yesterday that 55% of regional Queenslanders owned a smartphone.

Optus gave customers the chance to pre-order their iPhone 4S from Monday this week and Head of Optus Country Anthony Shiner said stores would be carrying more stock than previous years.

"Customers that have pre-ordered on the website will have guaranteed stock awaiting them at their chosen store from 8am," Mr Shiner said.

Telstra will also have the phones on hand from today and will be opening their doors at 8am to give customers the chance to grab one early.

Telstra opened pre-orders on Wednesday, giving customers the chance to have the iPhone 4S delivered to their door.
