Want to lose weight but hate the gym? Dave's your man
HE'S a former ironman who now spends his days moulding the mettle of many young mums.
Dave Cowan-Clark stepped away from his surf lifesaving career with Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club to study fitness, filled with a passion for helping others achieve their goals after spending time as a swimming instructor.
But rather than follow the traditional path of a personal trainer, Dave wanted to open the field of fitness up to those who were often frozen out of it.
Often a new baby can throw routines right out the window and Dave said there was usually a narrow window that if lost, often sent new mothers down a path of falling fitness.
So what do you do when the new mums can't get to the gym? Well you bring the gym to them of course, whether it's in the backyard or the garage.
"The reaction's been incredible," Dave said.
"A lot of my girls have leapt at that aspect (having the training brought to their homes).
"Once they have that little bubba rock up it's total chaos.
"It takes pressure off new families and coming to them takes a huge weight off their shoulders."
He's been running sessions from 5am through to 7.30pm Monday-Friday as well as Saturday mornings and he said he was still juggling the demand for spots.
He said he'd found through research that shortly after pregnancy was a key time for young mothers who, if they didn't begin some sort of fitness regime post-pregnancy, found their base fitness level quickly dropped away.
"You still need to stay fit and healthy to keep up with the young kids," he said.
His business has been up and running for about 18 months now and as well as young mums Dave's also working with a range of people, from time-poor professionals to those uncomfortable in a gym environment.
He said the young dads often also joined up after a few weeks, eager to keep up with their significant others.
"It's a whole range of people, I've been blown away with the scope of people (coming to see him)," Dave said.
And on the occasions when his clients could hit the gym he took them into The Muscle Hut at Warana where he also works.
Despite the imagery created by the name Dave said the gym was welcoming of all people regardless of what step they were taking on their fitness journey.
