War on ice gets $1 million boost

THE war on ice in regional areas will ramp up as the Queensland Government puts $1million towards a 24-7 helpline and advertising blitz.

The government created a multi-faceted plan to tackle the rising numbers of ice users in the regions.

The anti-ice message also will be pushed through community organisations, to create a "grass roots movement", and through social media.

But Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it would not be a scare campaign. "It's no good scaring people without offering any help," she said.

"It's a campaign that focuses on the health and social consequences for people who use this very dangerous drug.

"There are many people who have found themselves in trouble with ice and we need action to combat it."

Emergency medicine expert Dr David Caldicott said regional and rural areas were more prone to ice abuse because there were fewer support services and backyard ice producers were more prevalent.

The 2013 National Drugs Strategy household survey found the consumption of ice had more than doubled among methamphetamine and amphetamine users.

The Queensland Government has this week committed $20 million over four years to help police tackle organised crime, alcohol-fuelled violence and ice.

More than 90 people were arrested and $1.5 million of ice was seized as part of an eight-month police operation in south-east Queensland that wrapped up earlier this month.

The national ice taskforce, launched earlier this year, has already received more than 1300 public submissions. One in four people have shared how ice affected them, their families and communities.

If you or someone you know has an ice problem, the 24-7 hotline is 1800 177 833.
