WATCH: 'Flying dirt bike' Jetovator debuts in Gladstone

IMAGINE riding a dirt bike with 200 horsepower that flies.

It might sound dangerous, but there's no chance of hurting yourself and learning how to do it is easy.

That's the experience on offer at Awoonga Dam this weekend when Jetovator Australia makes its debut in Gladstone.

The Gold Coast based company, which has only been running for seven months, is testing the waters as the third P&O cruise ship sails into the harbour in the hopes of attracting tourists, and locals.

Former Tannum Sands man and Jetovator Australia owner Nathan Townsend said the company was already trying to break into the regional market when the arrival of the first cruise ships was announced.

"There's a real opportunity for the regional towns that aren't getting any attention from other operators," Mr Townsend said.

"We'll be using this weekend to gauge interest and hopefully we will be encouraged to come back."

The Jetovator works by using the power from a jetski which is sent up a large hose and into the Jetovator.

The person riding it controls the direction by leaning to turn or using the levers and the instructor controls the power.

"The best part is that unlike riding a bike, the worst thing that can happen is will is you will fall in the water," Mr Townsend said.

The Jetovator will be at Awoonga Dam, just 20 minutes from Gladstone, Thursday to Sunday and it will cost $99 for a 20 minute ride.
