Watson uses his head to see Wigan through


LAST year's FA Cup final hero was at it again, helping to secure holders Wigan Athletic a place in the quarter-finals.

Ben Watson, whose header in injury-time in the final against Manchester City took the Latics to an upset 1-0 win, scored the winner to cause another boilover against English Premier League side Cardiff City.

Watson's 40th-minute piledriver helped Wigan to a 2-1 win at the City of Cardiff Stadium. The visitors scored first through Chris McCann before Fraizer Campbell equalised.

EPL leader Chelsea lost the chance of a league and Cup double with a 2-0 defeat at Manchester City. The goals were scored by Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri as City kept alive its hopes of winning four trophies.

In the other tie, Sunderland held on for a 1-0 win over Southampton at the Stadium of Light.

The game between Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
