This Friday, September 1, supporters around the Central Highlands are being urged to wear their favourite footy jersey to work or school for 'Jersey Day' to help raise awareness for organ and tissue donation.

The day was inspired by New South Wales youngster Nathan Gremmo, who tragically lost his life in May 2015 when he was struck by a car.

He passed away in hospital the next day but his choice to be an organ donor saved six other lives.

Nathan's father Michael told NRL Media the family is now urging everyone to have "the conversation” about organ and tissue donation and hopes that Jersey Day can start that conversation.

"Unlike most causes they don't need money because it's well funded by the Government, which is great news. What they do need is awareness,” Mr Gremmo said.

"Only one per cent of people that die are eligible to be an organ donor. There are 1,600 people on the waiting list at the moment waiting for a life-saving transplants.”

QRL Central Highlands Operations Manager Cameron Stallard says this Friday is a perfect time to wear your favourite team colours, with it being Central Highlands grand final week.

"With the upcoming Central Highlands grand final this Saturday, this is a terrific opportunity to not only show your support for your local footy team, but also show your support for this very important issue,” Stallard said.

"Whether you're a Panther, Rabbitoh, Bear, Crushette or support another local team, be sure to wear your favourite team's jersey this Friday for Jersey Day!”
