Wellcamp Airport to offer tourist flights into space?
FLIGHTS into space for tourists could one day lift-off from Wellcamp Airport if a Queensland man's ambitious dream takes flight.
A group called Spaceport Australia, led by Rockhampton man John Moody, is investigating potential sites for a spaceport.
They include Townsville, Rockhampton and Toowoomba's Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport.
Mr Moody said he had met with the state and federal government to discuss his dream.
On Twitter, he claims to have submitted a Memorandum of Understanding with the Wagner family, owner of the Wellcamp Airport.
Mr Moody said the key to the spaceport and tourist flights into space was a 10,000-foot runway.
He told the Townsville Bulletin two weeks ago that US space corporation XCOR Aerospace, which begins testing its Lynx spacecraft this year, had "pretty much confirmed" it would be involved if he could secure an airport.
