Wellington accuses LNP of 'blackmail' over promises

INDEPENDENT Sunshine Coast MP Peter Wellington has accused the LNP of political blackmail after they warned that their election promises depended on LNP candidates being elected.

Premier Campbell Newman refused to commit to delivering on promises contained within the local plans for individual seats if the LNP's candidate is not elected.

He claimed the promises may not  represent the views of the other side.

"I made it very, very clear. If you vote 1 for the LNP candidate in your local area and they get up, they will deliver that plan," he said at the weekend.

"It's fully costed, fully budgeted and it will happen. If they're not elected, well, then the new member may have different ideas and different priorities and we cannot guarantee that it would be delivered."

On the Sunshine Coast, Mr Newman joined the Coast's five sitting MPs and the LNP candidate for Nicklin earlier this month to officially announce the duplication of the Beerburrum to Landsborough railway line.

He promised, if the LNP government was elected, the $532 million project would be finished by 2019 with construction due to begin this year.

He said it would "create 3000 jobs during the construction period".

A furious Mr Wellington said on the weekend that he was writing to the Queensland Electoral Commission to investigate Mr Newman's threats to voters.

"On Tuesday I will send a formal letter to the Electoral Commission asking them to investigate threats made by Premier Newman and his candidates to vote for the LNP or miss out on promised infrastructure and services,'' the Member for the Nambour-based seat of Nicklin said.

"These outrageous bribes or threats to voters could breach the Queensland Electoral Act and attract a term of imprisonment.

"Recently we have seen the Premier and his candidates warn electors that only if they elect them will they receive any promised advantages to their electorate. In other words, vote for me or get nothing.

He referred to Australia Day, saying the behaviour of this Newman LNP Government falls far short of that which we expect from our leaders.

The post was shared by almost 1000 people and attracted more than 150 comments.

Mr Wellington then posted a video to ram home the point.

APN is seeking comment from Mr Newman and the LNP.
