Highway bridge to remain closed for a week
TOWNS west of Rockhampton remain cut off from the city at Neerkol Creek after floodwaters stripped away a chunk of the bridge near Stanwell last week.
A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokeswoman yesterday said road crews were working to have access across the bridge restored as quickly as possible and it was hoped it would reopen within a week.
"It is estimated Neerkol Bridge will be closed for at least one week," the spokeswoman said.
"Geotechnical experts are currently inspecting the structure.
"Pending the inspection report, this bridge may be closed for up to two to three weeks."
The washouts vary between 1m and 3m in size, according to the spokeswoman.
Capella resident Erin Young, who is organising donations for the flood-ravaged Stanwell community, said delivery of items was dependent on road conditions.
"Obviously we're trying to get the donations to them as soon as possible," Ms Young said.
