Where will workers go as sun sets on Crinum mine?

AS Crinum Mine's life comes to an end, the future of its employees could be affected as redeployment to BMA's Blackwater Mine might not be possible under the site's current review.

CFMEU district president Steve Smyth said recent contracts awarded to Downer EDI could affect Crinum employees who'd hoped to transfer to Blackwater when the Emerald mine's production came to a close at the end of the year.

BMA said the company was still unable to provide an end date, but no forced redundancies would occur.

"BMA has engaged in formal consultation with its employees and their representative on a range of options, including redeployment at other BMA mines or in some cases voluntary redundancies," a spokesman said.

Mr Smyth said a lot of workers had hoped to make the transition to Blackwater Mine, keeping their family's ties to the region, but now with the uncertainty in Blackwater, it could be out of the question.

He said workers were feeling isolated.

"People from Emerald will be affected, people from Crinum will definitely be affected because they probably can't transfer to Blackwater Mine now," he said.

"Obviously there is uncertainty, their lives have been set up around here.

"No matter how much spin the company puts on it they can't answer the question about what will happen to these people."
