Whincup won't give up hope despite trailing teammate
MOTORSPORT: Jamie Whincup isn't about to just let Red Bull teammate Shane Van Gisbergen cruise to the 2016 Supercars drivers' championship.
Whincup is still holding out hope he can somehow snatch a seventh title despite the Kiwi leading the series by 190 points heading into this weekend's final round, the Sydney 500.
"Absolutely it's still on,” Whincup said. "My mindset is to never give up and absolutely go out there and go as hard as you can to the last lap of the last race.”
Whincup, however, concedes "it's a tall ask against a teammate who has exactly the same equipment (and) who also is extremely fast”.
After practice today, Van Giserbgen can wrap up his maiden title tomorrow as the Sydney 500 is run for the last time before the round moves to Newcastle in 2017.
"It's a crazy track, you've got to be good under brakes and good over the kerbs mainly. For us we'll spend tomorrow tuning it up and trying to get it suited to the track,” Van Gisbergen said.
"I'm feeling good and ready to go racing.”
