Why are these monstrous criminals being released on parole?

OPINION

CRAIG Smith, who raped a Victorian woman while out on parole, could be freed from jail in just three years.

A 31-year-old man who raped a nine-year-old girl could be walking the streets in a matter of weeks. And Neville Towner, the man who raped, bashed and murdered four-year-old Lauren Hickson at Emu Plains in 1989, could be free in just four days.

"The laws need to be changed," Lauren's mother Jurina says. "He should never be freed. No other family should ever have to go through what we've been through."

Every year for the past eight years Jurina and Derek Hickson have had to face Neville Towner in court as he seeks to be released on parole.

Every year they've had to turn up to court where Towner, now 51, sits in prison gazing at the court through a television screen, begging to be let back into society, while the Hicksons try to convince the Parole Authority that he should never, ever be released.
