Wigan still fighting to keep place in the Premier League

CALLUM McManaman's 80th minute winner at West Bromwich has improved Wigan's chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

Third-last Wigan came twice from behind to win 3-2 and the victory leaves them only two points behind 17th-placed Sunderland, who play against Stoke City tomorrow, and three points behind the struggling Newcastle and Norwich.

Wigan also has a game in hand, and if they beat Swansea tomorrow, they will find themselves out of the relegation zone.

"If we stay up it would be like winning the title," Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said.

Elsewhere, Arsenal striker Theo Walcott scored the quickest Premier League goal of the season after just 20 seconds in the 1-0 win at relegated QPR, Player of the Year Gareth Bale scored the winner for Spurs in the 1-0 victory against Southampton, while second-placed Manchester City drew 0-0 at Swansea.

Aston Villa won 2-1 at Norwich, West Ham and Newcastle finished goal-less in east London, while another already relegated club, Reading, beat Fulham 4-2 to give Nigel Adkins his first win as manager.
