Wrong turn on to highway led to crash that killed woman

A WRONG turn on to the Cunningham Hwy has led to a horrific car collision that claimed the life of a 26-year-old woman.

The head-on collision happened about 10.25am yesterday between the Swanbank Rd overpass and the Redbank Plains Rd overpass.

Preliminary investigations indicated the woman driver took the wrong exit onto the highway and began travelling against the flow of traffic.

The mistake tragically proved to be fatal when the woman's utility vehicle collided head-on with another utility.

Police and emergency crews rushed to the scene after receiving emergency calls about

the incident.

The woman, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle, a man believed to be about 59, was cut from the vehicle by rescue workers and rushed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with serious injuries.

There were no other people involved in the incident.

Emergency crews remained at the scene until late in the afternoon.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

The crash was almost repeated three hours later when a Mercedes Benz drove down the opposite side of the Cunningham Hwy in the wrong direction.

Drivers had to swerve to avoid the 71-year-old motorist.

Police were almost forced to use spike strips to stop the vehicle.

Fortunately, the car was eventually stopped by police at a road block on the Ipswich Mwy.

No one was injured.
