DRIVERS on Nambour Connection Rd may have wondered why the Big Pineapple has been almost completely painted white.

The Woombye icon is undergoing a makeover, with a long overdue paint job set to refresh the fruity monument.

East Coast Painting Contractors employee Wade Hodge said the white paint was the undercoat that would serve as a canvas for the pineapple's new look.

"It'll look like a real pineapple," Mr Hodge said.

"We're just going to brighten it up."

The renewal comes in time for a big year for the destination, which will host Midnight Oil for the band's reunion tour later this year as well as the annual Big Pineapple Music Festival in May.

The Big Pineapple project team has been developing plans for a makeover for the whole site, with a theme park, extreme sports, walking trails, food outlets and accommodation all suggested during consultation with the community.
