The wheel that snapped off this trailer started a grass fire off the Capricorn Hwy on Monday.

A MIDDLE-aged man towing a box trailer to Barcaldine on Monday afternoon unwittingly sparked an emergency on the Capricorn Hwy.

Sergeant Brad Cowell said about 5km west of Anakie the passenger side wheel left the trailer and ran into tinder-dry grassland, setting it on fire and burning out half a hectare.

The driver alerted property owners and local rural firies and the blaze was quickly dealt with before it escaped deeper into bushland.

"The poor maintenance of the trailer could have just as easily started another fire just like the one up the road at Jericho," Sgt Cowell said.

"I am just glad no one was hurt and the local property owners and rural fire services are so quick to bring these fires under control."
