Workers enjoy the 'Switch
BRISBANE-BASED public servants have embraced the daily commute to Icon Ipswich despite speculation the longer commute could deter staff from committing to the move.
Longer travel time was a major discussion point for unions as planning for the move of 800 public servants west lingered until early this year.
But for Seqwater senior operations analyst John West and learning and development advisor Emma Wright, the 45-minute commute from Brisbane's north side has been anything but a hassle.
They are the faces of a Seqwater campaign encouraging people to work in Ipswich and to consider beginning a career with the state's leading water authority.
Billboards at the entry and exits of the Ipswich Motorway at Dinmore featuring the pair lead the recruitment campaign.
The campaign encourages western corridor residents to apply for some of dozens of positions on offer in Seqwater at any one time.
Driving against the traffic and in some cases car pooling have proved to be a tonic.
Both public servants held concerns over the move when it was first put forward, but a love of their jobs and the chance to learn more about a new city swayed them to give Ipswich a go.
"My initial thoughts were I was a bit concerned about it, but I like my job and gave it a go," Mr West said.
"That's one of the things about exploring this place. Moving to a new city, if you are open to that sort of thing and having a look around. Ipswich has been good to have a walk around."
Ms Wright said the move west opened up a new opportunity.
"It's a really fantastic opportunity to work in a new city and I really love my job. That put aside any concerns about the commute," she said.
"There was quite a lot of support in terms of relocation assistance and parking and a car pooling system.
"It definitely has its upside. The building is great. It's a lot shinier then our old office. There are some really great coffee shops and everyone at Seqwater loves their coffee."
A Seqwater spokesperson said the agency's intranet offers a car pooling match-up service to connect employees with their closest co-worker.
