Xstrata offers up a thumping
XSTRATA Coal thumped BMA 60-24 in the annual Xstrata Coal rugby union charity match in Tieri at the weekend.
Despite weathering a heated 19-all half-time scoreline, BMA had few answers in the second-half and could only watch as the game slipped beyond reach with Xstrata piling on try after try.
Players from across Central Queensland's mining regions combined for the annual corporate challenge, which this year helped to raise $5000 for Xstrata's chosen charity, the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter service.
RACQ CQ Rescue is one of the busiest helicopter rescue services in Queensland and relies heavily on the community to provide funding for its operations.
Queensland Rugby Union CQ Regional Development manager Daniel Hooper said players, coaches, families and rugby enthusiasts enjoyed another great day of healthy competition.
"From a rugby perspective, the day was hugely successful this year and has proved to be a great launching pad for our upcoming junior rugby season in October," Hooper said.
"We had more teams this year than ever before at the charity day and through the continued support of Xstrata, rugby union continues to develop as a popular and inclusive game for children in the Central Highlands."
Eight junior under-13, U15 and U17 representative teams also competed from Central Highlands, Mackay and Rockhampton throughout the day. Showing continual development of rugby in the Central Highlands, the home teams performed well.
All three teams were unbeaten on the day.
