XXXX Island visitors are fishing in green zones

A FACEBOOK post condemning XXXX Island visitors for fishing in green zones and taking undersized fish appears to have hit the mark with XXXX Gold management.

Eco-tour guide Andrew Gill, who works on North Keppel Island, questioned the brewing giant about visitor practices after witnessing tinnies fishing in green zones and photos of undersized fish.

Within two days though, Mr Gill appeared satisfied his comments had been heard and were being addressed.

A spokesman from XXXX Gold said the company shared Mr Gill's concerns and had been in contact with North Keppel Island Education Centre and also planned to talk with the Keppel Bay Sportfishing Club for additional guidance.

"This is a shared paradise and it's our full intention and commitment to return the island in better condition … we intend to keep that promise," she said.

Yesterday, Andrew Gill posted again on Facebook that he'd had a call from the island's caretakers who were looking to implement a tag and release program through Austag.

"They are introducing tighter control of their tinnies … ensuring better education of green zoning with more accessible maps and more emphasis in the brief … all in all very positive XXXX have listened so thank you to everyone, hopefully all is implemented ..."

XXXX Gold said yesterday they were fully committed to maintaining the environmental integrity of XXXX Island and surrounding areas.

"We made a promise to return the island to Wayne and Laureth in the same, if not better, condition as we found it, and we intend to keep that promise."
