Yahoo's Marissa Mayer 'refused to hire' Gwyneth Paltrow

IT'S NO secret Yahoo's chief executive Marissa Mayer is a big nerd, so perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that she gave Gwyneth Paltrow the cold shoulder because she didn't graduate from university.

According to a new book chronicling her efforts to save the company, Mayer was desperate to attract "sophisticated" users and was looking to improve its digital content - she even suggested partnering with Vogue magazine, something which editor Anna Wintour wasn't too happy about.

Then Gwyneth Paltrow's name came up: the actress has a legion of fans, a cooking book and her own website, Goop, which has turned into a modern day bible for women who love yoga and all things organic.

But, according to Marissa Mayer and the Fight to Save Yahoo!, the 39-year old "balked" at hiring Paltrow as contributing editor for Yahoo Food because she "disapproved of the fact that she did not graduate college".

Mayer, a self-confessed nerd who is often described as Silicon Valley royalty, apparently takes a personal interest in her employees' education and that includes what and where they studied.

Unfortunately for Paltrow, who attended University of California at Santa Barbara for one year before dropping out to pursue acting, not having a degree was a no-no for Mayer.

The Yahoo CEO graduated from Stanford University and had 14 job offers waiting for her before decided to join Google as the 20th employee and first female engineer.
