Arty grew up on a cane farm on Ashby Island. He trained as a teacher and educated children at Tamworth, Quirindi, Yarrowitch and Rappville, finishing his career as a principal in Sydney. Throughout his life, Arty worked in numerous community groups, and he was a friend to all he met.
